We have a new pro Mark Buckley has joined the Grove Isle tennis team replacing pro Leandro Gutierrez. The affable tennis pro, who is already known to many of us, has brought his spurs and tennis racquet to our courts. Following his academic sojourn on the University of Alabama tennis team, he went on tour and reached the ranks of the ATP top 100. Traveling all over the world with his racquet, including Europe and South America, Mark won ATP challenge tournaments and added wins over top 50 players He settled in Germany where he played team tennis, became head pro at a Bielefeld tennis club, and coached up and coming players for four years. The motivated tennis player added to his challenge learning the German language. Upon his return to the USA, Mark became head pro at the Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables, where he offered his tennis teaching skills from 1994 to 2000. The accomplished tennis player then turned his interest to the stock market, became a stock trader, and manages accounts for his clients. The love for tennis brought him out of tennis "retirement" and, for the benefit of the Grove Isle tennis players, accepted the invitation to join us as tennis pro. "Tennis is my love," the personable tennis professional admits. And we love Mark for coming back to the sport we all love dearly. Welcome aboard, Mark.

St. Patrick's Day round robin The shamrock-color-clad ladies (and those assuming color blindness is in) eagerly await their leprechaun on the court. We set another record — the attendance record. Everyone came looking for the four-leaf clover and found it in the fun-filled evening of tennis and more. And the winners are from left to right: Magdalena Salvoch with her partner, Juan Bonnet; Carol and Norm (they're the ones handing out the prizes); and Hugo Huerta and aunt-partner Maruca Crosby. With both couples accumulating equal top scores, a spin of the tennis racquet by Norm gave the Maruca-Juan team the win and the top prize. Saying farewell to Leandro Pro Leandro Gutierrez listens attentively to the serenade delivered by the Yo-Yo Sisters Sheila Goodman, Yuen Swing, Hetty Van de Kreeke, and Susie Conroy. Leandro, we will miss you. We wish you success and good luck in your future endeavors. For more photos from the farewell party click here. World-class players practice at Grove Isle Robert Brechner Tennis Director Norm Schellenger is flanked on his right by Amelie Mauresmo and her unidentified hitting partner, and on his left by Carol Griffin and Sylvera Petit-Frere. The Number 3 singles player in the world, Amelie Mauresmo, worked out last week on the clay surface of Grove Isle in preparation for the Bausch and Lomb Tournament on Amelia Island. The 24-year-old Parisian decided just before the age of four to play tennis. A great decision! Had Amelie known Grove Isle welcomes man's best friend, we could possibly have also met Sophia, her golden retriever. |
