Bob Gersten enjoys a loving moment with grandchildren Theadora Gersten, left, and
Jo Anna Ezrat.

You know of Bob Gersten's formidable forehand on the tennis court coupled with his booming voice that's competing with his smashing serve to win a point or two.

You can also see him in action in the meeting room where he conducts seminars for the Grove Islanders.

In January, Coach Bob reminisced with "Sports Stories Old & New."

Professor Gersten organized and moderated presentations in 2004 and so far in 2005 gave us talks by Michael Hughes, MD; Rabbi Sam Kenner; and Jerry Grey, PhD.

Bob Gersten graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1942. He was elected President of the Varsity Club, and played varsity baseball and basketball for four years.

He received the Patterson Award for Leadership in athletics, character and scholarship. He then received a fellowship to teach physical education and was the Assistant Basketball coach until he left for the Air Force. In the Air Force he was the player coach of the basketball team.

He taught and coached at Long Beach High School for twelve years and then moved on to Nassau Community College as founding Dean of Students and professor of health, physical education, and recreation.

Bobby has been director/owner of Brant Lake Camp in New York for over 50 years and calls Grove Isle home during the winter with wife Libbie.

Meet Grove Hotel and Spa

Grove Isle Club & Resort has undergone a facelift and a name change. Following $3 million dollars in renovations and enhancements, the club and resort is now Grove Hotel and Spa.

The changes include renovated meeting spaces and guestrooms; a new chef, Donna Wynter, at the Baleen restaurant, and the opening of the 6,000 square foot Indonesian-inspired Spa Terre. The two-story spa features a couples massage room, three individual massage rooms, two facial rooms, a wet room with Vichy shower, a private steam room and a Zen meditation room.

The salon includes four hair stations, three pedicure stations, two manicure stations, and a makeup station. Additionally, Spa Terre will feature a Watsu pool with waterfall and Jacuzzi, yoga platform, and two outdoor massage areas offering Asian, Caribbean, and South Florida-inspired treatments.
