Sound waves
soothe tennis elbow

Most people with tennis elbow don't play tennis. The pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow most likely are due to repeated gripping, twisting and moving of the fingers, wrists and forearms, which cause inflammation of the tendons.

Symptoms of tennis elbow often are self-limiting. If you stop performing the offending movement, they clear up. However, anti-inflammatory painkillers, ice, physiotherapy or cortisone shots into the affected area, may be required.

A new treatment for chronic cases, called OssaTron, recently was approved by the FDA. OssaTron uses ultrasonic waves to regenerate healthy tissue to replace the inflamed or scarred tendons. It's the same technique that has been used successfully to shatter kidney stones and gallstones.

If tennis elbow doesn't respond to traditional treatments — painkillers, rest and cold compress — OssaTron may be worth a try.

Meet a most wonderful couple: Jacqueline and Ed Blumenthal.

Fifteen years ago, life dealt a cruel card to two Miami families: she accompanied her cancer-stricken husband to the Arkansas Cancer Research Hospital in Little Rock and he came with his wife who also suffered from multiple myeloma. The two couples met at the hospital, far away from home, spent much time together, shared the traumatic challenges they faced, and became close friends.

Jacqueline Seligman and Ed Blumenthal lost their spouses to the devastating disease in 1998, returned to their homes in Miami to go on with life, stayed in touch and nourished the friendship that began in Arkansas … and then decided to share their life together. In a ceremony at the Grove Isle Hotel, Jackie and Ed exchanged marriage vows in 2000 and made Grove Isle their home.

Ed, the native New Yorker, moved with his family to Miami in 1930 where his father operated Blumenthal Incorporated, a children’s wear sales representation business.

Though they did not meet until many years later, Jackie, who grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, also settled in Miami.

The Blumenthal business grew and Ed joined dad in the family business in 1950 and became its head when his dad retired. In 2000 it was Ed’s turn to retire. He handed the helm over to his son Bob who, though educated as an architect, is now the third-generation head of the Blumenthal corporation.

Jackie and Ed are the proud heads of a large family: Jackie raised three children and is also stepmother of three sons; and Ed has four children and 12 grandchildren.

Life at Grove Isle for the Blumenthals is one of activity and challenges amidst the splendor of living on a tropical isle.

Jackie is active with her circle of lady friends who meet every Wednesday over a game of mahjong.

Jackie and Ed are enrolled in the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute at the University of Miami. For a nominal fee, retirees are offered courses on various subjects, coupled with the privilege of auditing courses offered by the university.

This happy couple takes advantage of the many things life has to offer: going to the movies, the theater, Heat games, joining the social functions of the Grove Isle Club, and learning more by attending the lectures and discussions presented for the Grove Islanders.

Every Monday morning, you will see Ed and four of his neighbor friends bicycle across the bridge for a morning of exercise and camaraderie.

A great tennis partner: Ed enjoys his favorite pastime with Stuart Bender, Susan Lupien and Heinz Dinter.

The avid tennis player can be found on the court on many other days of the week playing doubles with his friends. “I have been playing tennis since I was eight and remember the days when the mosquitoes were so thick, we wouldn’t dare venture onto the courts in Miami Beach,” quips the man with the formidable forehand slice. “What a joy it is to play on the Grove Isle courts.”

“I have all I want,” says the 77-year-young Ed Blumenthal, “a wonderful wife, a very supportive family, many friends and friendly neighbors, and so much to do that keeps Jackie and me happy living on the island.”
