Asperger Syndrome (2008-05-31)

What is it?

Asperger syndrome is a neurological development disorder which is included within the autism complex, a variety of disorders that vary with each individual.

Asperger patients have a qualitative impairment in social interaction which results in a failure to develop peer relationships. There is a lack of spontaneous seeking to share involvement with other people.

Treatment

Therapeutic strategy in adult cases rests on two vital principles:
1) ferreting out the resistance and removing it;
2) learning to relate to others.

If the resistance is ignored, all apparent progress will evaporate upon completion of the attempt at therapy.

Natural history

Since the disorder reflects neurological impairment, one should expect treatment to be active, longstanding and slow as new structure is being created. Follow-up includes information from collateral sources as well as continued frequent and long-term contact.

Technique

Instruction techniques would appear intellectual (art of conversation and role-playing) only at first, but then give way to examination of here-and-now with the therapist as well as resolution of the underlying fears.

Progress

Successful movement should show the onset of the wish for and emerging practice of spontaneous connections. Islands of robust peer relationships would appear.
