Condo frenzy feeds culinary boom
Attracted by the prospect of thousands of new diners, downtown Miami is about to see an influx of major restaurants. Three fine-dining restaurants have committed to open in two of the major condo projects under construction in the urban core just north of the Miami River. And that’s expected to be just the beginning. In addition to already announced plans for a Whole Foods grocery, negotiations are in the final stages on at least another half dozen restaurants at varying price points, a movie theater and fashion retailers, developers said. It’s the outgrowth of downtown Miami’s building boom and a sign of the area’s transformation from a place where the streets roll up after dark into a vibrant, 24-hour community. Many envision this area becoming a dining destination for business crowds during lunch and in the evening. The first to open its doors is likely to be La Riva. A high-end Italian concept with an emphasis on seafood, it’s created by famed New York restaurateurs Gino and Fernando Masci. La Riva is expected to open at One Miami by sometime this fall. The other restaurants already committed to downtown Miami: · Manny’s Steakhouse, which is opening its second location in the country in the Met 1 tower next year. The original Manny’s, which is in Minneapolis and owned by Parasole Restaurant Holdings, consistently ranks among the Zagat Survey’s top two steakhouses nationally. The concept is a traditional New York steakhouse, with an average $75 per person check. · Market Grille, a new-age steak and seafood house created by Jim Dunn, the former president and chief operating officer of Smith & Wollensky. It’s scheduled to open late this year or in early 2007 at One Miami. Miami will be the site of the first restaurant for the concept, which aims to position itself somewhere between a Houston’s and a Capital Grille with a $50 per person average check. Phil Roberts, chairman and chief executive of Parasole Restaurant Holdings, said he was drawn to downtown Miami by the energy and the amount of construction, which he says is unlike anything he has seen in his travels around the country. Dunn marvels at the change he has seen in the area since he first started coming here almost a decade ago preparing to open the first Smith & Wollensky outside of New York. During that time Miami’s image as a luxury destination and a serious food town has dramatically changed, he said. Source: www.MiamiHerald.com.
