Voice of Compassion

A remarkable career's climax: a "tobacco
trial" watched over by the national media. A role model with deep roots in the
community. A neighbor with a profound sense of responsibility. The jurist called upon to
deliver justice in a trial with awesome implications for all of us, on an issue affecting
man, woman, and child cigarette smoking and health. A judge who
cares. [08-22-98]

For Living
Last month, health
officials in Europe and the United States announced that certain people
—
particularly pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children
— should go easy on the tuna. Seems that tuna
and other large, top-of-the-food-chain fish contain relatively high
amounts of mercury, which is not a good thing to eat.

Computer &
Internet Issues
The percent of seniors
who go online has jumped by 47% between 2000 and 2004. In a February 2004
survey, 22% of Americans age 65 or older reported having access to the
Internet, up from 15% in 2000. That translates to about 8 million
Americans age 65 or older who use the Internet. By contrast, 58% of
Americans age 50-64, 75% of 30-49 year-olds, and 77% of 18-29 year-olds
currently go online.

They are researching their family histories, sending e-mail, running
virtual book clubs, reading about religion and travel, and pursuing other
interests lifelong and new.
[04-04-01]
Many community colleges, adult education programs,
assisted-living centers and other institutions offer introductory computer
classes geared for older people. Several services, websites and tools have
also sprung up to help newcomers.
